Upon entering, DJ Mar Bar was messing with buttons and making deep menacing trance beats, or whatever. The room was pitch black except for some minimal abstract projections. Then Courtship Ritual from over in Brooklyn strolled on. A synth and bass two-piece, they also brought belly-dancers up on stage. Most of their brooding songs were really slow, sultry, moody and intriguing, if not exactly awe-inducing.
Despite it being the 20th anniversary for Mercury Lounge’s back stage room, the place wasn’t completely full. But those who were there got dancing right away once Weeknight came on with their ethereal, cinematic synth-rock. The duo employed electro-drums, guitars and samplers to create a pretty fresh take on this au courant style.
