Let’s be real for a second: most lyric videos suck. If you’re best idea for a video is just to put all the words from the song on screen, then you should probably head back to the drawing board (or film school). But the new video for Lushlife’s “Magnolia,” the easy-going, verbose opening track off his stellar 2012 album Plateau Vision, is the exception that proves the rule.
Using a bunch of cardboard cut-outs of all the words in the song—and there are a lot of words here—the directorial team of Lamar + Nik takes the viewer on a joyful and imaginative journey through the song, making some lyrical references literal (spot the Zola Jesus record at one point) and others into bizarre jokes (love the dude holding the microwave). Mostly, it’s just really fun. Check it out, below.
