Swedish electro-dance duo Icona Pop returned with “Girlfriend” back in May, delivering another high octane single in a similar vein as “I Love It.” Where that song found the pair teaming up with Charli XCX, “Girlfriend” draws inspiration from Beyonce and Jay Z’s “Bonnie & Clyde” and 2Pac’s “Me And My Girlfriend”; the hook borrows the line “All I need in this life of sin is me and my girlfriend.” In a true Bonnie and Clyde style, the video follows the pair as they hop onto a freight train.
The Swedish duo found themselves a surprise hit in their single “I Love It.” It’s propelled them toward proper pop star fame. Their debut album This Is… Icona Pop is due out September 24. Watch the video for “Girlfriend,” below.
