In an age when most music videos consist of a few light effects, some live footage and a fuzzy VHS aesthetic, its increasingly rare to see an ambitious music video, much less something as dizzying, playful and self-referential as the video for Aimee Mann’s “Labrador” off her latest album, Charmer. Then again, after the equally charming video for the album’s title track, it should come as no surprise that Mann’s latest is a winner.
The clip, directed by The Best Show On WFMU host and video auteur Tom Scharpling, kicks off with a behind the scenes intro featuring Mad Men actor Jon Hamm as a sleazy, moustache-sporting version of Scharpling and Superchunk drummer Jon Wurster as intense method actor Denny Rock. It only gets stranger (and funnier) from there as the Mann goes about staring in a remake of ‘Til Tuesday’s “Voices Carry” video. Seriously. It’s like that time Gus Van Sant made a shot for shot remake of Psycho, but, you know, way better. Keep your eyes peeled for Ted Leo sporting a fantastic wig and other little visual treats. Watch it, below.

And, if you wanna be really impressed by Wurster’s raw, nuanced performance, go ahead and watch the original 1985 clip, below.
