Some artists have pre-show rituals involving meditation, eating a particular type of sandwich, kissing a rabbit’s foot or slamming a six-pack. But for Matthew Dear, a brief stroll is warmup enough.
“Black City Live,” a new video from M ss ng P eces, follows around the avant-pop experimentalist, producer and DJ before he takes the stage at Brooklyn’s Music Hall Of Williamsburg. Cameras tail the Ghostly International artist as he walks across North Sixth Street, enters the venue, runs through his sound check and performs “You Put A Smell On Me,” from his Black City album, in front of a live crowd. The black-and-white clip only lasts less than three minutes, and while it doesn’t catch Dear doing anything bizarre backstage, it does catch a shot of the dapper music maker buttoning his shirt cuffs.
Dear will release a new EP titled Slowdance on April 5. The EP, which marks the third and final single taken from Black City, will include a reinterpretation from How To Dress Well, the track “Inhh Dahh” and remixes from Todd Edwards, Photocall, Mark E, Nicolas Jaar, and Sascha Dive.
