Supposedly sold out, it wasn’t super packed, but it was full enough at the Rough Trade venue in Brooklyn last night. Maybe the sudden rainstorm scared some people away. A fairly mixed crowd cheered through the long wait for Tinashe, chanting her name out constantly. Doors were at 8, and DJ Quiz did mix for a bit o’ background, starting about 9.
While Tinashe was supposed to go on at 10, she made the stage closer to 11. But it was worth the wait as this R&B pixie is a performing whirlwind. She’s a great singer, had loads of interaction with the crowd, hive-fives galore, good sound throughout, and just a well-rehearsed and choreographed show all around. While exclaiming New York was her “home away from home,” she nonetheless made a nod to her actual homeland with a rendition of California Love. She also jumped through 2 On, Vulnerable and others from her recent mixtape, Black Water. Done by midnight, no encore, left ’em wanting more. For a 21-year-old, Tinashe has this showbiz thing down.
