UPDATE: According to TMZ, M.I.A. will be held financially responsible for her middle-finger shenanigans during the Super Bowl if the FCC decides to fine NBC. TMZ writes, “M.I.A. signed a contract with the NFL for the halftime performance, and in that contract M.I.A. agreed to indemnify the NFL for any money it might be forced to pay if the FCC comes down on the Peacock Network.” There’s no word on whether or not the tight-rope dancing guy signed a similar contract.
Let’s forget Eli Manning’s stellar feat of American sportsmanship and talk about M.I.A.’s perpetual attempt to appear hard as hell. While performing Madonna’s new single, “Give Me All Your Luvin’,” M.I.A. took the opportunity to thank the millions of global viewers by flipping off the camera and singing, “I don’t give a shit.” The bird display subsequently led to NBC’s failed attempt to bleep out the image and expletive last night and apologetic statements from both the NFL and NBC today.
“The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing, and we apologize to our fans,” said Brian McCarthy, spokesman for the NFL. NBC spokesman Christopher McCloskey responded with, “Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture, and we apologize to our viewers.” As far as the rest of the over exaggerated performance: Shout outs to those music note Adidas sweat suits, the tight rope walker who looked like a young Will Ferrell and Pastor Cee Lo Green, who led us all to “World Peace.”
No comment yet from M.I.A., but it seems like she’s taking this whole “Bad Girls” thing a little too seriously. Watch the tantalizing performance for yourself below. It’s no Nipplegate, but it’s entertaining nonetheless.
