The Music, TV and movies from the ’80s are like this invisible tapestry of culture in our minds. It all blends seamlessly, something that Summer Camp, that group of up-and-coming Brits with the penchant for synth-pop, knows all about.
Jeremy Warmsley and Elizabeth Sankey built their band around John Hughes movies, classics like The Breakfast Club, 16 Candles and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. I can sympathize with the 1980s film love; most of my life is built around Ghostbusters. But these films could be at once definitive and kitschy, which is what you can expect from Summer Camp’s Welcome To Condale, slated for release November 8 on the band’s Apricot, a Moshi Moshi imprint.
The album is inspired by Hughes’ fictional Midwestern town of Shermer, IL, where the pantheon of his characters reside. Summer Camp’s gone further west, however, and added Condale to the California coast. “All the songs are set here in various decades,” says the band, “and there’s a cast of lovelorn sweethearts and oddballs.” That, in a nutshell, is the band’s video for “Round The Moon.” It borrows footage from a 1970s Swedish coming-of-age flick, but with the updated soundtrack it’s right at home in ’80s cannon.
Despite the date on the label reading “1984” Summer Camp sounds very fresh. You can trace back its musical lineage to Cyndi Lauper, Flock Of Seagulls, Lips Inc, but this only gives Summer Camp a more genuine feel, as unforgettable as any great 1980s hook.
Not bad for a band formed out of boredom. Warmsley and Sankey got together in October 2009 to cut a lo-fi version of “I Only Have Eyes For You,” and the rest took shape from there. London’s Moshi Moshi came calling and asked if it could release the band’s song “Ghost Train” as a single. Summer Camp’s early days of gigging were rough since the group never played live before. Now though, with the kinks all worked out, the members will be headlining on tour in England as Condale hits shelves.
