Sure, independent record stores might be making a mild comeback (which in music retail parlance means they haven’t all completely closed yet), but try running one in lower Manhattan these days. So not only is the longstanding Generation Records longstanding, and still stocks loads of cool stuff, but they ward off the dark, gut-burrowing feelings of the inevitable with fun shindigs like this free (if you bought the new Jicks record on the way in) show in their cozy downstairs last night. The place was sardine-canned with roughly 50-60 people. Mr. Malkmus and his crew sounded fantastic, demi-fresh from playing Jimmy Fallon’s show on Monday, and grooved through most of their new album, starting off with Rumble at the Rainbow. If you’re ever in the NYC area, always check Generation Records website, as they tends to do these live band things somewhat last minute or without the kind of hype-oversaturation we are usually inundated with.
