Christopher Owens, frontman of San Francisco rock group Girls, has announced via Twitter that he is leaving the band. On his personal Twitter, Owens wrote:

Dear all, This may come as a surprise to many & has been an issue of much thought for me. My decision was not easy to make. I am leaving Girls. My reasons at this time are personal. I need to do this in order to progress. I will continue to write & record music. More will be announced soon. I thank you all for everything. Sincerely–Christopher

According to Pitchfork, there is no word on whether J.R. White, the other primary member of the group, will continue to create music under the Girls name.
This is certainly surprising news for fans of the band, and it will be interesting to see if the group attempts to continue without Owens’ distinct, Elvis Costello-like vocals and his considerable songwriting gifts.
