Sebadoh kicked off the week at Mercury Lounge, with crowd capacity at maximum—not a huge surprise given the past success of these indie-rock founders, their continued bubbling-under influence, and their sudden reappearance. Openers Octagrape may have been the surprise of the evening, for those who showed up early enough to catch them. They brought an energy to their scruffy indie chug that made their stage presence irresistibly fun and entertaining.
Sebadoh brought with them a charming allure that, presumably, can only be fully garnered after some 25-odd years of playing together. Playing some tunes off their recent 2013 release, Defend Yourself, Sebadoh got the crowd feeling right at home with these lo-fi indie rockers. Be sure to check them out again tonight at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn.
