After cementing a legacy for himself with the Walker Brothers and his prolific solo career, singer-songwriter Scott Walker signed to 4AD in 2004 and has been releasing material more frequently ever since. His latest project is a score commissioned by the UK’s Royal Opera House, called Duet For One. Walker’s score provides the sonic backdrop for a re-imagining of Jean Cocteau’s famous play, Duet For One Voice, into a dance piece. The work is part of a larger project called Cocteau Voices, also comprised of a one-act opera. Walker has no plans to release the score commercially, but 4AD has posted an excerpt online, in anticipation of the score’s world premiere tonight.
Duet For One premieres at the Linbury Studio Theatre in London, under the direction of Tom Cairns and with choreography by Aletta Collins. Performances run through June 25. Hear the excerpt from Walker’s score below.
