In Scene Report, CMJ’s latest column, musicians from all over the globe fill us in on what’s going on sonically in their hometowns. This week Myele Manzanza of Electric Wire Hustle gives the scoop on Wellington, New Zealand.

Wellington is a set of hills surrounding a flat central business district and harbor in the middle. It isn’t too spread out, which creates a very communal vibe to the place, and with a population of just under 200,000, everyone knows everyone. The same is true for the music scene, which borders on incestuous. In that environment, it becomes more about different configurations of musicians all mish-mashing together, and out of that stems more solid units like Fat Freddy’s Drop, the Black Seeds, Trinity Roots and many others. My band, Electric Wire Hustle, is somewhat a product of that communal vibe.
