Rilo Kiley has broken up—for real. In an interview with Spinner that was posted yesterday, guitarist Blake Sennett said that the Los Angeles-based band was no more.
Rilo Kiley has always had drama. Lead singer Jenny Lewis and Sennett had a tumultuous personal relationship for several years followed by a less-than-harmonious breakup. The two spilled all the details in an especially gossipy piece in Spin in 2007. In the whiny Spinner interview, Sennett said, “I just felt like there was a lot of deception, disloyalty, greed and things I don’t really want to submit myself to,” he said. “I had related that frustration to music but I just thought, ‘I’m not going to put myself in that position again,’ so I said, ‘Fuck that, I can’t do this anymore.'”
Whether the end resulted from animosity between the band members, Lewis’ continual solo success or something else remains up to speculation. What’s clear is that this split was not an amicable one. No other member of Rilo Kiley has stepped up yet to respond to the guitarist’s comments. The abrupt announcement means that 2007’s Under The Backlight will be Rilo Kiley’s last studio album, though you might hear some new Rilo Kiley yet. According to Sennett, the band still plans to put out up to 40 songs of unreleased material.
