On the heels of the announcement that they will be releasing a new album, The Silver Gymnasium this fall, Okkervil River have dropped the lyric video for the barely optimistic It Was My Season. The video was filmed at a town hall in Plainfield, NH, a place of many cherished memories for vocalist Will Sheff, who’s originally from the Granite State. The scenic stage design in the clip is a painting by early 20th century artist Maxfield Parrish. There’s also a brief cameo by Plainfield’s librarian Nancy Norwalk, who controls the lighting while It Was My Season soundtracks the subtle changes that occur on stage.
For over a decade Okkervil River have churned out the sort of nostalgic folk-rock that makes you want to drink too much Miller High Life, then go out on the porch and call someone you shouldn’t. It Was My Season opens with some unexpectedly lively keys, but once Sheff jumps in with his determined moan, saying things like “If you wanna stop our ‘thing,’ you’ll stop my heart,” you know this is the same Okkervil River you’ve always known, loved, and cried to on the subway.
