Strut recently released Good Times 30, a collection of DJ Norman Jay‘s favorite hits from his 30-year residency at the Notting Hill Carnival with the Good Times Soundsystem. Jay, who started the Good Times Soundsystem in 1981 and became a prominent DJ in the London groove scene, has packed the compilation with reggae, doo-wop, soul, independent hip-hop and jazz songs to span the breadth of music he has spun in the last 30 years.
To celebrate the release, and the season of the grill, here are Norman Jay’s 10 favorite BBQ jams.
10. Herbie Hancock – “Stars In Your Eyes”
It just sets the right vibe without over imposing. A very classy tune.
09. Ashley Slater – “Private Sunshine”
Fills the place with relaxing positive thoughts.
08. King Stitt – “Fire Corner”
‘Cause it really makes me think of a nice BBQ in my dad’s garden back in the days.
07. Edwin Hawkins Singers – “Oh Happy Day”
Especially when there’s plenty of good food on the table.
06. Jean Carne – “Don’t Let It Go To Your Head”
To encourage a bit of wisdom.
