Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to the weekly CMJ charts. In the Chart Discovery column, we highlight exciting artists, albums and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This round’s picks come via 95bFM in Auckland, New Zealand and WEFT in Champaign, IL.

Mermaidens on 95bFM

Dark, sultry percussion and dreamy vocals are layered over fuzzy surf guitar on Bones, the first EP from the New Zealand-based trio, Mermaidens.

Kind Ira on WEFT

Kind Ira claim origins in “Steel towns, Nashville, and the haunted South” and that rings loud and true through their debut album, Together, We Are Not Alone. Seemingly designed to fill the sonic landscape of a light-filled and bittersweet flim, the album is rich with vocal harmonies over lo-fi pop, intermixed with the occasional energetic track.
