Maximo Park played at the Gramercy Theater on a rainy Friday night, touring for their fifth full-length release, Too Much Information (Daylighting). It’s quite rare that bands of this size from England tour the U.S. often. Also bucking stereotypical U.K. band cool ‘tude, Maximo Park were genuinely grateful to those who came out “on a Friday night in New York City, when you could be doing just about anything, and you chose to come and see us.”
Despite starting about 20 minutes late due to setup problems, and then having the PA drop out completely in the middle of the band’s set, singer Paul Smith seemed unfazed, and Maximo Park took about a minute break offstage while the problem was resolved. Though they knew they were running over their 11 p.m. curfew, they continued to play their full set to an excited crowd, technical snafus be damned! They did a pretty decent job of playing songs from all of their albums, with an expected emphasis on newer songs, but they knew what fans wanted to hear both new and old. With Smith running around the stage, even those who may have been unfamiliar with the music at least got a great show.
