Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to the weekly CMJ charts. In the Chart Discovery column, we highlight exciting artists, albums and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This round’s favorites come to us via KUGS in Bellingham, WA, and KDHX in St. Louis, MO.

Manatee Commune on KUGS

Manatee Commune, a.k.a. Grant Eadie, Western Washington University student studying audio engineering, has been greatly supported by his home school’s radio station: The silver-toned dream sequencers and crackly chimes of his stunning just-released LP, Brush, have landed him a No. 2 spot on KUGS’s chart this week. Watch the equally enchanting video for the title single below.

Circassian on KDHX

Athens, Greece is representing on KDHX’s new world chart, with the fuzz-rock quartet Circassian landing at No. 9. The surfy, B-horror jams of Hantse Guashe, the band’s self-released debut, are complimented by monotone vocals boarding on the throat singing-esque sound of garage heroes the Novas.
