Though he may not be as well known as his Savemoney bud, Chance The Rapper, Chicago’s Vic Mensa has recently been doing all kinds of stuff, and proving himself to be an incredibly versatile musician in the process. After Mensa’s stupid-good mixtape, Innanetape, dropped last year, there was the yalping, rock-inflected She Loves The Mirror off Kitty Cash’s mixtape, Love The Free. Then a skittering freestyle over Disclosure’s crossover hit, When A Fire Starts To Burn. And then there was the left-field club stunner, Feel That.
Now Mensa’s back with a new one and a new sound, Down On My Luck. Over a classic, washed-out house beat, Mensa raps with smooth finesse and without his signature stutters and yalps. While we don’t know yet if this track is part of a larger project, all these sides of Vic Mensa should tide us over until then. Listen to Down On My Luck below.
