After a period of inactivity following the death of bassist Gerard Smith and their departure from Interscope, New York art-rock figureheads TV On The Radio have gotten back to doing what they do best: releasing new music. Today the band shared a new track today titled “Mercy,” the first bit of new material from the group since the release of their contemplative 2011 effort Nine Types Of Light.
While live video recordings of the song have been surfacing on the internet for months, fans now have an official studio release to listen to. The track is a heavy, unapologetic synth-driven missile that combines the subterranean aspects of the band’s older material with hammering drums, expressive vocals and a keyboard part that could’ve been lifted from a ’80s New Wave band. The razor-sharp guitar licks alone will have you begging for “mercy” by the end of the song.
“Mercy,” along with the rest of TV On The Radio’s forthcoming new material, will be released on band member/producer David Sitek’s label Federal Prism. But you can hear the song on SoundCloud (via the Huffington Post) below.
