The self-titled debut from Swedish punks Holograms was one of those albums that sneaks up on you. It was an abrasive and confident record, but not necessarily an immediate one; its mix of snotty, political punk rock with yearning, romantic synth-pop took time to reveal its many charms. Now the group is back with a single called “Flesh And Bone” from a new album, Forever, which comes out September 3 via Captured Tracks, and it doesn’t waste any time.
The song finds the band embracing the crooning side of its aesthetic, combining a strong melody with clashing post-punk guitars. It bears a slight stylistic resemblance to Iceage’s “Morals,” until the dreamy synths pop into the mix toward the end and things really take off. Stream it below.
