Le Butcherettes, the critically acclaimed garage punk band from Mexico that is now based out of L.A., has announced a fall tour that will include the band’s first headlining shows on the East Coast and in Chicago. The band’s blood-covered, theatrical performances have clearly started to take off outside of the Mexican underground scene as it is supporting Iggy And The Stooges and the Flaming Lips on some of the dates. As if that weren’t enough, the band has played festivals like the Corona Capital Festival in Mexico City (alongside the Pixies and Interpol), the Sonar Festival in Barcelona, Lollapalooza and is slated to play this year’s Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, TX.
Lead singer and guitarist Teri Gender Bender, who calls herself a modern feminist and names Sylvia Plath as a major influence—hopefully minus the oven—has made a name for Le Butcherettes with her intensely untamed live shows and theatrical flair. After moving to L.A. in 2010, Gender Bender gathered together the likes of drummer Gabe Serbian and bassist Jonathan Hischke to form the current lineup. Garnering comparisons to Karen O and Patti Smith, Gender Bender’s fierce lyrics and badass persona add something that seems to be missing from many punk outfits these days—some good old fashioned misbehavior. And the comparisons aren’t without merit: Yeah Yeah Yeahs invited Le Butcherettes to open for the band while in Mexico as part of the It’s Blitz tour in 2009.
The group’s fall tour will be supporting its latest release, Sin Sin Sin (Rodriguez Lopez via Sargent House), which was produced by Omar Rodriguez Lopez of the Mars Volta. Rodriguez Lopez also contributed bass to all of the album’s tracks. With such a star-studded cast of supporters, and a growing fan base, it’s no wonder Le Butcherettes is going places fast.
