Last night’s CMJ-sponsored showcase for the Latin Alternative Music Conference at the Bowery Ballroom started off with a bang with the indie-rock Spaniards Napoleon Solo, winners of the conference’s “Artist Discovery” award. The five members of Napoleon Solo played pumping rock and ska music accentuated with synth and melodic vocals.

Five other bands followed Napoleon Solo, including NYC-based Diego Garcia, No Te Va Gustar, Ximena Sariñana, Cuarto Poder and Francisco Valenzuela. The showcase—open only to LAMC badge-holders with a small number of tickets available for the public—featured music running the gamut from Venezuelan rap to Spanish indie-pop, yet the sounds remained cohesive and continuous.

Most of the bands stuck around after they performed to talk with the audience and check out the other acts. The audience was also ready to embrace the laid-back atmosphere; after a long day of panels and shows, the crowd was happy to sit at the candlelit tables of the second floor and drink in the eclectic music.
