How does one follow a Playboy bed being lowered from the ceiling? At Terminal 5, the Bacardi-sponsored Like It Live event became a show of oneupmanship, with each passing act being more ridiculous than the last. Kid Cudi was the main draw for the show. Taking the stage around 1.30 a.m., with most everyone in the building drunk off of free Bacardi cocktails, Cudder performed a solid set that focused more on the songs from last year’s Man On The Moon II: The Legend Of Mr. Rager. However, there was no denying that the loudest cheers and singalongs came when he played tracks from his debut album. One thing that stood out was how much more control over the crowd Cudi had, a marked improvement from previous shows. Maybe it was the alcohol, or maybe it was just his charisma, but the building was his for the taking and he did an adequate job of delivering on that.

Of all the secret acts that appeared during the night, the most appreciated was the full set from one Childish Gambino, aka Donald Glover. Taking the stage in a white t-shirt and short shorts, Cheezy ran through most of his hits (“Not Going Back” was, sadly, absent), as well as using the screenshots from his most recent IAMDONALD tour to display messages like “This is not Rap Cool” and “DOPENESS”. As Gambino finished up his set with “Lights Turned On,” the club jam from his most recent EP (appropriately titled EP), the floor mass jumped in unison following his lead, a surprising turn considering the late hour and exhausting show.

Also of note was the excellent DJing from Tamara Sky, who mixed while people were filing in, combining the old (personal favorite was “Play That Funky Music”) and the new to get people dancing right away. DJ Irie did a similar act while also hyping the skateboarding/BMXing going on behind him on the halfpipe (yes, there was a halfpipe), while French beatbox/DJ duo Eklips and DJ Mouss wowed the crowd with some intense spitting, even if their set went on for about 15 minutes too long. The entire night, as mentioned repeatedly throughout, was sponsored by Bacardi, who spared no expense in making this a hell of a party; there was even a free arcade, because, why not?
