After playing a handful of well-received sets at this year’s SXSW, pioneer Malian singer Khaira Arby will return to North America this summer for a victory lap. Throughout July, Arby will hit a couple of festivals while also playing in New York and California venues in which the big, flowing dresses that she wears onstage are probably a rare sight. Arby will be joined for the tour by Her Band, the backing ensemble bringing conventional western instruments to Arby’s spirited blend of West African roots, reggae and desert blues.

This interplay between the traditional and the modern is heavily present in Arby’s music, especially on her latest album, Timbuktu Tarab. Arby uses the record’s songs to retell legendary African folklore, as well as to speak out in favor of progressive causes like the improved treatment of women in Mali.
