The Skins, a humble new band reigning from Brooklyn, opened the evening with their energetic, rootsy soul-rock sound, like a fresh-faced Bell Rays. With band members aging in range from 15-21, it’s surprising to see how at home and charismatic the group was in front of such a large audience. The house filled up early with anxious Jake Bugg fans, who nonetheless welcomed the Skins with ears wide open and hearts full of adoration. It wasn’t so long ago that the group graced much smaller stages with their swanky sound, and it certainly won’t be the last time we hear from these up-and-comers.
2013’s “Next Big English Thing” Jake Bugg headlined the show to a load of screaming teens. While not the most stage-storming live act, his eerily haunting voice and working class pop-rock rumblings pierced through Terminal 5 like a Lightning Bolt. Coming to New York just days after his 2014 Brit Awards nomination, he might just have many of us saying, “One Direction who?”
