This is just another tick off the list of all the reasons why Jack White is a stand-up fella. Last month, the world’s largest Masonic temple had its outstanding tax bill of $142,000 settled by an anonymous donor, saving the 14-story Detroit landmark from foreclosure. It has now been revealed by the president of the Detroit Masonic Temple that the mysterious donor was Third Man Records’ own Jack White. White was raised in Motor City and had a personal connection to the 91-year-old building where his mother worked as an usher while he was growing up. The Temple’s 1,600 seat Cathedral Theatre will now be renamed the Jack White Theater in honor of his generous donation.
“Jack’s donation could not have come at a better time and we are eternally grateful to him for it,” Roger Sobran, the DMT’s Association’s president, told the Detroit Free Press. While Jack White currently calls Nashville his home, he’s proven his loyalty to his roots back in Detroit.
