Dance-punk group !!! headlined the third show in the Vans House Party series in Brooklyn last night. This year’s House Of Vans shows began at the end of June, bringing acts like Fucked Up and Toro Y Moi to the skate park-turned-venue, but last night’s show may have been the wildest—and potentially perilous—show yet.
!!! is currently touring in support of its slightly reserved fifth album The!!!er, released in April via Warp. That sense of reservation wasn’t anywhere to be found on last night as !!! launched into its funky set of psychedelic hits as the bare-bones warehouse continued to fill up. The band’s set focused heavily on material from The!!!ler, the highlights being “Even When The Water’s Cold,” “Californiyeah,” “One Girl/One Boy,” and the slightly demonic track “Get That Rhythm Right.” The band also played tracks off of their 2010 album Strange Weather Isn’t It? with “AM/FM” and 2007’s essential Myth Takes with “Must Be The Moon.”
It was obvious the band was glad to be back in Brooklyn following a lengthy European and North American tour. Playing in front of three giant inflatable exclamation marks, frontman Nic Offer yelled, “This is a really exciting show for us. It’s so good to play a hometown show!” Offer conjured up spell-binding dance moves that kept fans in constant motion, hypnotized by his grooves and maybe the giant disco ball in the center of the warehouse. Anytime Offer made his way into the crowd, which was just about every song, fans would do their best to get their hands on him— oddly, stroking his hair seemed to be the most popular move.
Offer’s wild stage presence only got the better of him once, when he attempted to climb on top of a large lighting fixture and nearly brought it down on the crowd. He fully recovered, strutted back to center stage and finished the song. Commenting on the incident later, he said, “Right, so…don’t fuck with those.”
