Each week the CMJ staff sifts through thousands of radio playlists that contribute to the weekly CMJ charts. In the Chart Discovery column, we highlight exciting artists, albums and songs brought to our attention by the charts of our reporting panel of college and non-commercial radio stations. This round’s picks come via KVCU in Boulder, CO, WMUA in Amherst, MA, and WUOG in Athens, GA.

Homebody on KVCU

Reaching out of the ever-growing Denver/Boulder music scene, Homebody’s album provides a feeling of dependability and comfort. The songs are steady, melodic, but unique. Check this album out for something new, but in the same vein as your favorite post-DeMarco bands.

Fraternal Twin on WMUA

Remember Pinback? Remember how records like Summer In Abaddon made you want to sit on a bench and think about thinking about thinking about your angst? This record is a 2015 version of that, and thank goodness, because we all needed an updated soundtrack for such activities. Fraternal Twin has a real talent for creating songs that weave so well together while standing on their own. Cue introverted music time, now.

El Hollin on WUOG

Providing that exact mix of adorable melody and vocals in tandem with intense lyrics like, “I hope you get mugged on your way home tonight,” El Hollin are a beautiful mix of bittersweet sentiments. This album feels refreshing and different, and is worth a few listens until you’ll be humming along with them.

Check out some of our other picks from the charts this week: $10,000 on WITR; Katapulto on WNYU; and Windigo on CFMU.
