In Scene Report, musicians from all over the globe fill us in on what’s going on sonically in their hometowns. This week Herzog gives us the scoop on Cleveland, OH.
Cleveland, OH, is the best place in America to start a band. Everything is dirt cheap here! The mortgage on my house is $495 a month, and I split that with another indie rocker. Domestic beer is cheap, and there’s a plethora of locally owned used record stores to feed that need. The bands here are accustomed to not breaking through, so they developed a very resilient attitude. If you can neither succeed commercially nor fail artistically, you’ll stick it out. Bands exist for years (or decades—see Pere Ubu or Glenn Schwartz), and with new bands coming up who aren’t assholes (like we once were), the scene is strong and growing. Let’s start.
