Gordon Voidwell (aka Will Johnson) has been quite busy—he announced the title for his debut self-released album, Leap Into The Void, (which should be out spring 2012), released a new mixtape track with an accompanying video, and he is slated to play two CMJ showcases next week. The Bronx-born singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist has quite a bit in store for fans and soon-to-be fans with his free MalcolmXMcLaren mixtape and a video for its track “MalcolmXXXMcLaren.” The video, available above, features layered film clips of people jumping rope, shaking their wares and voguing to the sounds of Voidwell’s swaggering, Prince-like rock/rap.
No stranger to balancing new and old, indie and pop, rap and rock, or cool and dorky, Voidwell’s eclectic sound is truly his own: He produced all of his own tracks, sang all of the vocals and played all of the instruments on his forthcoming debut, with the exception of one guitar solo on a track called “New Number Old Trick,” performed by Vernon Reid of Living Colour. With his wide variety of skills, it’s no wonder that since dropping his 2009 self-released Voided Checks Mixtape for free, Voidwell has been garnering a whole lot of buzz.
Voidwell also caught up with CMJ TV’s Book Club series back in August to discuss James Baldwin’s Another Country. Check it out below, as well as his tour dates.
