Almost a month to the date from its last NYC performance, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah played a quick set for KEXP’s showcase at the Ace Hotel. Despite the 4:30 p.m. start time, the lobby of the hotel was crowded with photographers, music industry people and, of course, some loyal fans. They were not disappointed, as the band ripped through songs fromits most recent album, Hysterical, before ending with a quick one-two punch of older songs.
Starting with off with the new album’s opening track, “Same Mistake”, CYHSY eased the crowd into its new sound with that album’s most comfortable showing. That quickly turned into the shout-along “Maniac,” featuring drumming that sounded even more bombastic in this crowded semi-venue. A quick slowdown came next with the twinkling “Misspent Youth” before the title track and the rocking “Ketamine And Ecstasy” signaled the end of the new album segment. Each track received a warm welcome from those in attendance, even if some of them seemed not to know the new songs.
Those people were surely pleased, then, with the final duo. First came “In This Home On Ice,” from the band’s debut album. This got the crowd bobbing along as well as it could here. This was actually the one problem with the set: CYHSY’s music demands more dancing than was afforded by the tight space. It was therefore an interesting choice to end with “Satan Said Dance,” a track that demands moving (hell, it’s the title!). Regardless of that, the final two songs were a nice tip of the hat to the band’s longtime fans.
