It looks like the U.K. bass producer Floating Points is working on a business model to revive the music industry and save physical record sales: package albums with doses of custom-made drugs tailored by the producer himself. At least, that’s our suspicion. For what other reason on God’s green Earth would an 18-year-old guy (who makes mind-bending bass music and has a background in classical composition and jazz piano from a school of music) major in pharmacology? Maybe to have a fallback if that whole music thing doesn’t work out. To his credit, Floating Points does seem to be something of a nerd producer—if there’s “math rock,” there can be “math bass.” For starters, he named himself Floating Points, which has something to do with math and computers, so maybe he’s just one of those guys who is into pharmacology.
If you’d rather watch a triply visualizer video synced to psychedelic bass music then try to discern what a floating point is based on a Wikipedia page, we got you. Judging by the video Floating Points released, it seems like he plans to use that pharmacology degree to enhance his work as a producer. The video is part of his joint audio/visual venture with Will Hurt, who develops programs that sync k-holeish visuals to drum machine and synth patterns—this one in particular is synced to “Sais,” one of the five tracks on Floating Points’ upcoming Shadows EP, which is due out November 21 on Eglo.[/vimeo]
When he’s not crafting bass-heavy chill-out music to supplement his studies, Floating Points is known as Sam Shepherd, the London-based producer who has piqued the interest of BBC’s beat music connoisseur Gilles Peterson and producer/writer/DJ Mary Anne Hobbs. With a background in musical studies from Chetham’s School Of Music, he began to compose and conduct the Floating Points Ensemble, a 16-piece group arranged to carry out his jazz-inspired sounds in harmony. Shadows comes on the heels of a handful of EPs and vinyl releases via Eglo, R2 and Planet Mu, and is available for streaming on Floating Points’ SoundCloud page.
