Following their Saturday show at Glasslands in Brooklyn, Ex Hex took Sunday night by storm with Speedy Ortiz. The Mercury Lounge double-billing turned out to be a one-two punch of indie rock and grunge pop.

Big Ups kicked off the night, playing loud enough to ensure everyone would forget they had work the next day. Then Speedy Ortiz took the stage, building with strong vocal leads from Sadie Dupuis and a solid backing from the band. Their songs contained unusually catchy melodies that played hard with harmonies for an eerily unique live performance.

Capping off the evening, Ex Hex took over the stage with their enchanting presence. The liveliness and spirit of the crowd began to build as Mary Timony, Laura Harris and Betsy Wright played a slew of songs off their debut album, Rips. Much like Speedy Ortiz, Ex Hex didn’t disappoint. These ladies seemed right at home in the sold-out venue, soaking in the crowd’s admiration and bursting with a level of energy begging for a much bigger space.
