Esperanza Spalding—the Portland, OR, jazz bassist with singing chops as robust as her hair—will support her new album, Radio Music Society (out March 20 via Heads Up), with a month-long tour across the U.S. this spring and select shows in Europe and Canada. So far 17 dates are confirmed, including a spot at the New Orleans Jazz And Heritage Festival, with more on the way.
Spalding has been laying her dulcet voice to tape since her 2006 debut, Jujo, but remained relatively obscure until she won last year’s Best New Artist Grammy for Chamber Music Society, ousting the Biebs in probably the second-biggest shocker of the evening. Radio Music Society will follow up Chamber Music Society‘s jazz snappers with an even lusher “big band” sound, featuring a slew of guest vocalists and musicians including Tribe Called Quest MC-turned-producer Q-Tip.
Fans who use Ticketmaster to secure a spot at any of Spalding’s shows will be rewarded with a free download of “City Of Roses,” an infectious love letter to Portland from Radio Music Society. If service fees are against your religion or you just can’t shake the Spalding fever, here’s a live version of the song to hold you over.
