Thundercat may be reaping all the current bassist buzz (and rightly so), but Meshell Ndegeocello has been quietly killing it with her signature smolderingly unassuming way for some odd 20 years, weaving in performances alongside the Rolling Stones, Madonna and Chaka Khan amongst others. The vocalist and First Lady Of Bass continues to plug away with news that her ninth album, titled Weather, is set for release November 8 via Naïve.
Ndegeocello’s forthcoming LP is produced by Joe Henry, whose previous credits include Aimee Mann and Ani DiFranco. He also appears musically on the album in addition to guests including former Revolting Cocks member and industrial rock champion, Chris Connelly, and Jeff Bridges collaborator, Benji Hughes.
Weather sees Ndegeocello throw a cover Leonard Cohen’s “Chelsea Hotel” into the mix alongside her usual round up of spacey, rolling bass numbers. “Dirty World” is the first track to surface off the album and exhibits Ndegeocello’s elongated feel that stretches out a melody over shuffling bass and percussion.
