At this year’s College Day, on Wednesday, October 14, we were joined by many incredible stations from our College Radio Network, with over 160 stations represented. The Gallery room at Dream Downtown was packed throughout the day’s programming, and featured live sets throughout the day, curated by Sounds Australia.
This year we added some new styles of programming to the schedule. We kicked off the day by getting the crowd’s college radio queries answered by college radio promoters in an “Ask Me Anything” setup, to allow for a greater variety of answers to the many questions people had about being on the industry side of radio. If you were wondering what the deal with adds was before, you probably left the day with a much better understanding. Some of the other new programming included Airchecks, which were a series of short talks presented by various station representatives, allowing individuals to tell their station’s stories. We heard uplifting tales about taking a station from being online-only to FM, and learned the tips of the trade for being a successful specialty music director. Another new addition was a session centered around the Executive Board at stations, which included talk about handling crossover effectively in year-long positions.
But it wasn’t all new. The longtime crowd favorite, the Music Directors’ Summit, once again hit it home for all of the MDs in the room. We noticed some common themes discussed throughout the day were community members’ involvement in student-run stations, difficulties in receiving funding at stations, and community outreach via local events, among others.
Finally, the CMJ College Radio Awards celebrated the best of college radio, from large to small. It was really exciting to be able to recognize the best of the best, not only the stations that won, but all the nominees.
