In addition to five non-stop nights of killer music showcases and amazing new artists, CMJ Music Marathon 2014 will also take over NYU’s Helen and Martin Kimmel Center for an unbelievable series of exclusive industry events, including conferences, panels, presentations and workshops. Even though you’re probably still reeling from the initial artist announcement, brace yourself, because we’re about to announce a few of this year’s panelists. On October 21-25, CMJ badgeholders will have the unique opportunity to witness and partake in conversations with some of the most influential figures in the industry.
Check out this list of some of this year’s panels, and feel free to nerd out accordingly:
Merge 25: A Conversation With Laura Ballance And Mac McCaughan
The celebration of the 25th anniversary of Merge Records has so far included a music festival of Merge artists and a series of incredible monthly reissues. Core Superchunk members and Merge founders Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance will join CMJ in an intimate conversation with former Spin Editor-in-Chief and Buzzfeed Features Director Steve Kandell about the beginnings, trajectory and future of one of the most important labels in indie rock.
Zola Jesus In Conversation With John Norris
Over the course of her career, Nika Roza Danilova, aka Zola Jesus, has been a consistent source of unparalleled musical innovation, and her forthcoming LP Taiga promises to take her genre-bending songcraft to new heights. This panel places Danilova in conversation with noted music reporter, journalist and former MTV correspondent John Norris, who was also a founding partner of Noisevox and, most recently, a supervising producer for Fuse’s Fuse News.
Tom Scharpling In Conversation with Chris Gethard
Tom Scharpling is a comedian, television writer, producer and radio host. Though perhaps known best as the host of WFMU’s The Best Show, which began in 2000 and aired its final program in December of last year, Scharpling has also directed videos for New Pornographers, Ted Leo, Aimee Mann, Ben Gibbard, Titus Andronicus and Wild Flag. Scharpling, who joins CMJ as one of the most prominent and distinguished figures in modern music commentary, will be placed in conversation with Chris Gethard. Gethard, comedian, actor, writer and host of The Chris Gethard Show will join Tom for what promises to be a memorable collaboration.
In addition to the conferences, the panels and all that other good stuff attendees have come to expect from Music Marathon, CMJ 2014 will also feature:
CMJ 2014 will host several exclusive film screenings, including:
The Color Of Noise: Amphetamine Reptile Records documentary with an exclusive Q&A with director Eric Robel and Haze XXL (Thomas Hazelmyer – President, Amphetamine Reptile Records)
Musician, special effects artist and now filmmaker Eric Robel’s full length documentary, The Color Of Noise, is an exceptional look at the integrity of the American underground starting in the late ’80s through the mid ’90s, specifically targeting forerunners of the grunge movement, noise rock, the collision of punk rock and printmaking, and beyond.
Extended Networking Hours:
Expanding on CMJ’s role as a key space for industry interaction and collaboration, CMJ 2014’s schedule will also feature extended networking sessions to facilitate dialogue between all components of the industry.
And all that is just the beginning. CMJ 2014 has many more bands, panelists and event announcements still to come! Stay tuned to www.cmj.com/marathon for all the updated info.
