The CMJ Marathon is commonly thought of as a nighttime activity, probably because that’s where most of the most frantic action takes place—sprinting down the sidewalk to get to the next venue, grabbing a slice of pizza in between shows, paying for a cab you can’t afford to catch a set from a band that you “just have to see”—but sometimes the things that go on under the light of day in the cozy confines of NYU’s Kimmel Center are just as fun, just as invigorating and way more enlightening.
If you’re looking for a refresher on what you saw this week, or if you couldn’t make it to CMJ this year (really, come on, what’s wrong with you?) and you still want to soak up some of that music industry shop-talk and sense of community, you’ve come to the right place.
This year’s panel topics covered just about every aspect of the music industry, from journalism to recording methods to digital technology to social media to innovative venue spaces to branded placement to video game music. For the first time, CMJ hosted a series of exclusive Silver Boardroom meetings with top-tier executives and innovators in the music industry, giving badge-holders the opportunity to interact with creative thinkers in an intimate, professional setting. If you didn’t learn anything, you probably weren’t paying attention.
Also, this year’s daytime activities included our annual College Day, which featured a breakfast, radio-centric panels, performances by up-and-coming bands and the hotly contested College Radio Awards.
Check out what you missed, or just reminisce about the good times you had, below.

This year, CMJ introduced the Silver Boardroom Meetings, which provided badge-holders the opportunity to engage with music industry experts in an small-scale, professional setting. The conversations in each meeting were driven by the people invited to speak, which included names like Daniel Glass of Glassnote Records, Russel Fink of Island/Def Jam, Alex Luke of EMI and Cathy Bauer of Daptone Records. Check out a photo gallery of all the action in the Silver Boardroom, below.

On Thursday, college students and radio industry professionals from around the nation gathered for College Day to celebrate college and community radio. As always, the event was a major highlight of the festival, with informative panels, live music, delicious food, giveaways and more. Australian artists like San Cisco, Emma Louise and Jinja Safari provided the music for the evening, while the event itself was presented by TuneIn. The highly coveted College Radio Awards were also handed out, and you can find a full list of winners here.
