Musically speaking, we knew that Canadian band Austra liked to keep things dark. Frontwoman Katie Stelmanis has a voice like a lonely mermaid and the band’s most recent LP, Olympia, is often piercing in its gloominess. But when the group took the stage at Music Hall Of Williamsburg last night, the lighting in the room itself was equally subdued. Stelmanis swayed hypnotically under filtered spotlights, lulling the crowd into a tranquilized state before picking them up again with swift key changes and bubbly drum beats.
Austra was joined by CMJ Marathon stand-out Mozart’s Sister. Caila Thompson-Hannant’s soaring vocals were a perfect match for the dim lighting and her explosive, stuttering synths seemed to create a light of their own.
