Your thizzy friend probably already knows about the whacked-out ridiculous show Amon Tobin has designed for his latest album, ISAM. It’s just the kind of next-level cyber mindfuck to make a DJ set unequivocally amaaaaazing. If you were trapped inside of a computer’s microprocessor while the machine was k-holing, it probably wouldn’t be as cool as Tobin’s show seems. From what it looks like, Tobin has created a 25-by-14-by-8-feet stack of cubes that project hardcore iTunes visualizer effects synced to the album. He DJs from one of the boxes, where he also has control over the custom software designed to orchestrate the visual effects. The audience is way down below him, probably tripping balls.
Judging by the video of Tobin’s world premier in Montreal, there’s not even a coherent way to talk about the show—except maybe in the digital blips and buzzes of Tobin’s music. Predictably, he has a team of people from V Squared Labs and Leviathan designing and building the set that will make Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball look like the faux-weird little league of crazy shows and that old overhead projector your parents used to trip out on at Jefferson Aiprlane concerts simultaneously combust.
