MANCHESTER, TN — IPhone in hand, CMJ’s Ari Lipsitz reports from the mud-caked splendor of Bonnaroo.

Day 2

Arcade Fire, photo by C. Taylor Crothers courtesy of Bonnaroo.

Hot. Feet hurt. Need to drink more water. Sleeping may be giving in, but at 4.30 a.m. your will runs out. It’s cold. Two hours later, the sun and heat gently caress you from your hole in the ground where you’ve unceremoniously passed out. It’s hot again. You’re always missing bands. You meet people who know people who you haven’t talked to in years. There is no shade. It’s dusty from all the footsteps. It’s hazy. It’s Bonnaroo, and I’m loving every second of it.

Matt And Kim: The dynamic duo from Brooklyn has enthusiasm down to a science. Matt And Kim‘s shows really don’t change much from set to set; there’s the singalongs, playfully obscene banter, the laugh lines, the almost-excruciating enthusiasm (“let’s make these next three minutes the start of the BEST SUMMER OF YOUR LIFE”), as well as the delightfully punky stylings of keyboardist Matt and drummer Kim. Friday’s was a fun set with few surprises.

Givers: Givers did enthusiasm as well, but unlike Matt And Kim, it wasn’t part of the act. Givers, a new band from Lafayette, Louisiana, carried a blistering set with massive smiles and excitement. After an exploded van nearly prevented the band from playing, a Bonnaroo set (on a small but absolutely packed stage) must have been exhilarating. Givers delivered its blend of zydeco and indie pop in multi-sectional songs with personality; from guitarist-singer Taylor Guarisco’s possessed expressions, to synth player Nick Stephan grinning as he busted out a flute, to the extraordinary technical proficiency of the rhythm section, to the interplay between singers Guarisco and Tiffany Lamson (are they friends? Are they dating? It doesn’t matter, as they may win the award for “Cutest Indie Couple of 2011″), Givers’ show was an absolute highlight of Bonnaroo.

My Morning Jacket: Few bands are as versatile as My Morning Jacket. This fact was demonstrated in a two-hour set to tens of thousands, as special guests like Ben Sollee, a Nashville brass band, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band ran through extended hits and guitar solos. Jim James, the be-haired, be-caped, be-ugg’d frontman guitarist, was a madman, tearing through high notes like vocal cords were Thin Mints.

Arcade Fire: I almost feel bad about writing this. I am fully convinced Arcade Fire is the best band on the planet right now, which isn’t really that courageous a statement; I mean, you’re reading this—unless you’re just being contrarian for the sake of killing yr idols or indulge in misplaced adolescent cynicism, you probably at least like Arcade Fire. Arcade Fire is stadium rock at its finest: universal, loud, earnest. Bonnaroo did nothing to change my opinion; the band’s set was mostly the hits, the light show was unchanged, Win Butler is a greatly awkward yet endearing frontman, “Wake Up” is the best encore song of all time—it was all there. I teared up at the right places. I danced at the right places. I sang along to all of it. It was nearly perfect and entirely unsurprising, and that’s all I have to say about that.

Around 2 in the morning, I was assaulted by bass in every direction. Three electronic groups and Lil Wayne were playing at the same time, with the heavy bass that they all used (because everyone knows there can never be too much bass) bleeding into each other’s sets. I hear “I wish I could fuck every girl in the world” out of tune with another techno song across the field. I checked out Ratatat and found a somnabulistic visual display and irritatingly dissonant music, sounding something like Thin Lizzy sped up and fed into the synth in “Harder Better Faster Stronger,” over tropical beats. Pacifiers were abundant, so I suppose being in more of an altered state would have helped. The bass was inescapable at Shpongle and Pretty Lights, to the point of the sets becoming indistinguishable. But that’s alright, because rather than be a display of musical talent, they were the soundtrack to a lively evening for all involved. That’s Bonnaroo.

You know, back in our day, way back in the early 2000s when we took a 15-hour drive down to Manchester, TN, for some newfangled music gathering, Bonnaroo was all about throwing on your gender-neutral hippie skirt and vibing out to jam bands like Widespread Panic and String Cheese Incident. And while those bands are still on the lineup for the festival in 2011, they’re now standing shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Lil Wayne, Arcade Fire and Girl Talk. Hippies, meet the hipsters.

This year’s Bonnaroo, held June 9-12, is now sold out, but CMJ has got the hookup. Enter your information below for your chance to win two general admission wristbands to the festival.

We’ll pick a winner on Monday, June 6, so get in there while the getting is good. And in the words of Neil Young, appearing at Bonnaroo this year with the newly reunited Buffalo Springfield, keep on rocking in the free world, kids.

Two full days have passed since the end of the 11th annual Bonnaroo Music And Arts Festival. Now that we’ve finally slept and showered, it is time to use our clear-ish heads to appraise the four-day musical celebration that spreads across 700 acres of farm in Manchester, TN. Here are some of the best sets we saw.

Phantogram
The electric-rock duo set the bar high for acts to come on Thursday night of Bonnaroo. Phantogram played its most popular songs like “16 Years,” “When I’m Small” and “Mouthful Of Diamonds,” led by Sarah Barthel’s airy vocals and Josh Carter’s swirling guitars. The set was accompanied by an awesome light show, and the high-energy performance got everyone on their feet to dance.

Radiohead
On Day Two of the festival, Radiohead rocked out for a two-and-a-half hour show, taking two encores in the 25-song set that spanned the band’s entire career. Matched with a mind-boggling light show, tracks like “Lotus Flower,” “There, There” and “Karma Police” left the crowd in awe. Radiohead dedicated “Supercollider” to Jack White, which has led to whispers about a possible collaboration in the near future.

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Red Hot Chili Peppers tore up the What Stage on Day Three. The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductees’ two-hour set included an equal amount of new and old music to keep all kinds of fans happy. Opening with “Monarchy Of Roses,” they pumped up the audience for favorites like “Give It Away,” “Dani California” and “Suck My Kiss.”

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Give it Away

Art Vs. Science
The Australian three-piece dance band was extremely busy this Bonnaroo weekend. Playing two scheduled sets and then popping up here and there for surprise performances, there was no time for the group to get tired. Enthusiastic and out-of-its-mind weird, the band was hard to miss in matching silver jumpsuits. From the choreographed head-banging to beer-chugging on stage, Art Vs. Science’s entire act was infectiously fun.

 Art Vs.
Beach Boys
Beach Boys made Sunday’s weather a little less gloomy with their bright and bubbly set. United for their global 50th anniversary tour, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks brought together thousands of people, young and old, to hear them play for one of the first times in two decades. Even though the Beach Boys are no longer “boys,” they still know how to charm. As beach balls bounced, people all over sang and clapped to the classics “Surfing Safari” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.”

Beach Boys – Wouldn’t It Be Nice

Bon Iver
Justin Vernon and his Bon Iver band members did the impossible on Day Four of Bonnaroo: They managed to calm the hyped-up festival-goers into near silence for an entire hour-and-a-half set. It was a nice break from the dancing, stomping and clapping that was non-stop all weekend. Exploring a dynamic range of sound, songs like “Perth,“ “Skinny Love“ and “The Wolves” were downright beautiful. But apparently the experience wasn’t as enchanting for the band as Vernon criticized the stage they were playing on. While Bonnaroo tried to make the What Stage a more intimate setting, Vernon said they were too “cramped” as they squeezed all nine members of Bon Iver and their instruments on one small platform. But, hey, they looked and sounded great.

 Skinny Love by boniver

Fun.
Fun. was scheduled to play at the same time as the Shins, Civil Wars and Young The Giant, but fans still flocked to That Tent to watch the spectacle that is Fun. The pop group promised Rolling Stone that this would be its “best show of the year,” and the band truly delivered. Starting the set with songs like “One Foot,” “Walking The Dog” and “It Gets Better,” Fun. made a risky decision to save its crowd-romping hits till the end. Luckily, the plan did not backfire, and the audience only got crazier as Bonnaroo security guards were caught off guard with swarms of crowd-surfers during “We Are Young” and “Some Nights.”

 Some Night

Phish
Phish wrapped up Bonnaroo with a jam-packed four-hour set. The festival could not have had a better ending. Focusing on its country and funk material, the group wowed all who remained at Bonnaroo. As if Phish weren’t enough, Kenny Rogers made an unforgettable guest appearance when he sang “The Gambler” with the band.

Weezer at Bonnaroo 2010. Photo by C. Taylor Crothers

Bonnaroo is ten years old and still getting high. Earlier today the line-up for the Manchester, TN music festival was announced, with the likes of Eminem, Arcade Fire, Widespread Panic, the Black Keys and Lil Wayne enticing thousands of music lovers and inebriation seekers to once again flock to the rural countryside.

Superfly Productions and A.C. Entertainment have put together one of the most eclectic line-ups to date. Though it looks to have moved farther away from the hippie/jam band-centric genre that put the festival on the map, some of the dreadlocked, cargo short-wearing population will still be wandering around, with bands like Widespread Panic and String Cheese Incident playing.

The people who were at the first fest would never have believe that the likes of Eminem and Lil Wayne would eventually be controlling the main stage. We could sit here trying to make witty comments all day about the wide range of bands playing, but it’s probably be best for you to just look it up yourself and make them in your head.

This year marks the return of Bonnaroo’s legendary Super-Jam. Currently scheduled to collaborate is Black Keys bluesman, Dan Auerbach, and Dr. John—the man who gave the festival its namesake back in 1974 with his album Desitively Bonnaroo. Other participants in the jam will be announced soon. Another interesting feature this year is the specialty venue “Global Gypsy Punk Revue,” whose curator is Gogol Bordello’s lead singer and professional mustache owner, Eugene Hutz.

But remember, Bonnaroo isn’t all about experimenting with drugs and only remembering the walk to see those bands that you love so much. The festival promoters have expanded Bonnaroo’s already eclectic list of amenities by adding more wholesome activities like sustainable agriculture classes, yoga classes, comedy shows, salons, restaurants and rows of craft vendors. It is a music and arts festival, after all.

Tickets go on sale this Saturday, February 19, exclusively at bonnaroo.com.

For the 12th year straight, the Bonnaroo Music Festival will hit Tennessee this summer from June 13-16. The headliners for this year’s fest include Paul McCartney, Mumford And Sons, and Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers. Other noticeable artists include R. Kelly, the Wu-Tang Clan, Grizzly Bear, Pretty Lights, Kendrick Lamar, Matt And Kim, Passion Pit, the xx, Nas, A$ap Rocky, Bjork, Local Natives and the National. Tickets for the festival will go on sale February 23 at 12 p.m. EST through the festival’s <a href="http://www.bonnaroo.com/tickets/"_blank">website.

As you can tell from the lineup, Bonnaroo’s focus, which was originally around rock and jam bands, has evolved throughout the years. The fest now features a wider range of artists, including some of the biggest names in hip-hop, EDM and ex-Beatle-dom. With the higher level of acts comes an intense level of media attention and a bigger focus on presentation. Case in point: This year the fest’s lineup was revealed via a live YouTube stream hosted by Weird Al and a presentation by comedian Daniel Tosh. You can view both below.

MANCHESTER, TN — IPhone in hand, CMJ’s Ari Lipsitz reports from the mud-caked splendor of Bonnaroo.

The Drums: Jonathan Pierce struts like a diva. That basically informs all of the Drums’ live performances, which consist of the band playing post-punky riffs while Pierce impersonates a stuttering peacock. This plays well, however, as an animated frontman is always a plus—particularly when he has such strong songs to sing, like “Best Friend,” which he introduced with “This song is about my dead best friend.” Predictably, the strongest applause came for the strongest song, “Let’s Go Surfing”; during the breakdown, the entire crowd immediately started clapping with the rhythm, to which Pierce responded by strutting even more.

Sleigh Bells: Sleigh Bells came onto a gradually escalating series of fight songs: “We Will Rock You,” some metal song and then “Iron Man.” The said trio of anthemic ’80 metal basically defines Sleigh Bells’ sound; the duo is, essentially, what would happen if Queen only wrote songs like “We Will Rock You.” Four massive Marshall stacks filled the packed tent with lovely distortion, providing an avenue for ex-hardcore guitarist Derek Miller to deliver riffs over huge blast beats. Leading the proceedings on the mic was frontwoman/cheerleader Alexis Krauss, dressed in her trademark “Bells” jersey and shiny tights, alternately barking and singing wispily, sending the crowd into a frenzy. The audience quickly turned into a full-on mosh pit during indie hits like “Infinity Guitars” and “A/B Machines,” with elbows flying and the fallen helped to their feet, lest they be trampled. The only respite at all was the wavy “Rill Rill,” which provided a break everyone was grateful for. I began the show wondering how Sleigh Bells was going to fill an hour-long set with 35 minutes of material; actually, it’s good that they didn’t play any longer. When every song is “We Will Rock You” there’s only so much you can physically take before you fall on the floor.

Childish Gambino: Donald Glover’s side-project-turned-real-project has turned the actor-comedian into an actor-comedian-rapper-singer-producer who can command a crowd of thousands in a tent, with hundreds more necks craning to see from the sides. Instead of his half-comedy-half-rapping shtick that sold out twice in New York last month, Glover stuck entirely to his raps. With a full band behind him, Glover was a dynamo, jumping on every flat surface and running through most of his raps. While known for Derrick Comedy and his ensemble role on the critically acclaimed sitcom Community, Glover is also a really, really talented rapper. This makes sense, as the overlap between witty rap lyrics and comedy writing is pretty significant. It is a good trend when rappers mention Scott Pilgrim. And can I say that “everything I’m saying, I’m super-sayin’ like Goku” is the line of the year? Glover closed to massive applause with “Lights Turned On,” the beat-heavy standout from his last EP, showing that sometimes, you really can cross over.

Flickr photo by Chris Friese

It’s summer, and with the season comes a slew of music festivals. Audiences grow by the thousands each year, but the increase in popularity at these shows has led to an increased threat of concert danger. Half of the news we hear these days about festivals addresses the massive injury or death tolls resulting from stampeding, drugs, alcohol, overheating, etc. Recent years have proven more deaths and intense injuries at festivals (counting four deaths at the 1969 Altamont vs. 19 deaths and more than 340 injuries at the 2010 Love Parade in Germany, according to the Riverfront Times), but this hasn’t scared away masses of people ready to party.

Just earlier this summer at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, TN, two festival-goers died, with one death directly linked to the overheating condition of hyperthermia. According to the Los Angeles Times, a 24-year-old man died from heatstroke and a 32-year-old-woman was found dead at the campgrounds, with heat as the suspected cause. The Huffington Post reported that this year marked the 10th death at the festival since 2002, despite the organizers’ efforts to create a hydrated and safe environment. The festival did provide cooling water sprays and free water throughout the four-day event, but this could not completely erase the risk that comes with hosting 80,000 concertgoers in an outdoor, 90-degree environment.

At the Electric Daisy Carnival in Dallas, TX, earlier this summer, at least one teen was found dead while dozens of other festivalgoers were rushed to hospitals and carted away in ambulances due to heat- and drug-related issues. EDC is no stranger to scandal; the festival was banned in Los Angeles after a <a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/02/rave-embroiled-in-a-subject-of-conflict-of-interest-scandal-to-move-to-las-vegas-from-los-angeles-me.html" target=_"blank">15-year-old overdosed on ecstasy last year. The Dallas Observer detailed this year’s medical emergencies and how overwhelmed the local hospitals, police/fire rescue teams and paramedics were. As attendees were carted out of the festival grounds by 1:40 a.m., even the main performers noticed the overcrowding of the event: “There were just too many kids on stage,” stated Diplo to the Observer.

Another festival death appeared to have more to do with being over-stressed than overcrowded. U.K. politician Christopher Shale, a friend of Prime Minister David Cameron, was found dead at the U.K.’s Glastonbury Festival inside of a portable toilet. According to the <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/david-cameron/8600074/David-Camerons-friend-Christopher-Shale-dies-at-Glastonbury-after-Downing-Street-call.html" target=_"blank">Telegraph, Shale’s death came shortly after he received word that “criticisms he had made of the Tory party were about to be made public.” Rumors were divided on whether the death was due to a heart attack or a suicide.

The causes of death vary among these three situations, but the solution, aside from drink water and beware of massive crowds, seems to be the basic buddy system adopted in kindergarten. Travel in packs, look out for your concert brethren and if necessary, channel the Woodstock 1969 mentality that the “man next to you is your brother”—and that you might want to <a href="http://www.hark.com/clips/hhvdhchcgc-woodstock-equals-brown-acid" target=_"blank">avoid the brown acid.

<a href="http://www.mumfordandsons.com/" target=_"blank">Mumford And Sons has announced that it will headline a U.S. tour in June, which will include shows at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. This tour immediately follows Mumford And Sons’ participation in the Railroad Revival tour, where the band will travel the American Southwest on vintage railcars and play shows with other indie-folkies Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show.

Though Mumford And Sons has been popular in Britain since its founding in 2007, it was not until the group was nominated for a Grammy in the Best New Artist category last year that it began experiencing popularity in the States. Since its Sigh No More album was released in February 2010, it has steadily climbed the Billboard 200 and reached the No. 2 spot in January 2011.

Austin post-rock band Explosion In The Sky has announced a long line of U.S. tour dates for this fall. This comes on the heels of the band’s latest LP, Take Care, Take Care, Take Care, as well as a spring tour that included a sold-out headlining show at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. The quartet is currently touring Europe and will play at Bonnaroo in June, but it starts its headline U.S. tour with a show at Tucson’s Rialto Theatre on September 1.

Explosions has also announced its first show of 2012, which will happen at London’s 4,500-capacity Brixton Academy. It will be the band’s biggest U.K. headline to date.

For a good chunk of the U.S. dates, Explosions will be joined by Baltimore folk-rock duo Wye Oak, whose latest album, Civilian, was released on Merge earlier this year. The opening act should lend a homey contrast to Explosions’ immense, mesmerizing live show.
