M For Montreal, Day 4 | November 21, 2009
The kind organizers at M For Montreal had arranged a very easy schedule of events for us to follow, leaving just enough free time for those of us who wanted to to see a bit of the city. I made the decision to forgo the sightseeing for a visit to Concordia University’s campus radio station, CJLO. What should have been a nice little jaunt across town took up most of the daylight hours thanks to massive traffic delays. Here’s me showing my appreciation with the station’s music director, Omar Husain. Lunch wasn’t provided.

I missed a large chunk of the Francophone showcase thanks to horrendous traffic (and eventually lunch) but managed to get there in time for the last half. Géraldine was the most stunning group to perform en français. Their purposefully maligned stage show was aided by their banter, none of which I understood but it certainly got the audience laughing. (I’m told they said something like “for all of you who hated the first song, you’re really going to hate this one” right before half the room emptied).
After a quick break for a meal once the Francophone showcase ended, Metropolis opened its doors to thousands of fans eager to see a hodgepodge of regional talent that otherwise would never share the same stage. I was able to sneak myself on the side of the stage for Malajube’s set and watched an enthralled crowd sing along in French to every word. It was great to be removed from the small showcase environment for the final performances as local legends like Melissa Auf Der Maur, DJ Champion and Misstress Barbara won over their hometown crowd.
Les superlatifs:
Most precious – La Patère Rose
Best use of a desktop fan – Géraldine
Most obvious absence of Orange amplifiers – Orange Orange
Most likely to have played Warped Tour in every French-speaking city – Xavier Caféïne
Most obvious lack of any kind of motorcycle on stage – Misstress Barbara Live w/Girls On A Ducati
Best backing band – Melissa Auf Der Maur
Most audience members swooned – Malajube
Most guitars on stage at any given time (not all of them fit in this picture) – Champion & SES G-Strings
Quickest to clear a room – Fucked Up
