M For Montreal, Day 1 | November 18, 2009

Bonjour,

I found myself on the most surreal international flight in known history yesterday morning as I boarded a plane so small I could count the total number of bodies with both hands (including the crew!).  Sooner than it takes me to get to work in each morning, I was in one of my favorite cities, Montreal, for the landmark M For Montreal festival.  The event is organized to showcase local and national talent to a variety of international representatives who, if minds are blown, will hopefully join in spreading support for these artists.

The first evening was designed to be mostly an ice breaker as most delegates battled with jet lag, especially those who had to take trains to planes, suffering for more than 24 hours to make the journey and then getting saddled with some asshole like me as company.  While no one was expecting to get entertained on our arrival, dinner ended with two local bands performing right upstairs from where we dined.

The first of the two bands really couldn’t have given a shit less that they were there.  Three young ladies and one guy took the stage with so much disdain to the room that I incorrectly assumed their performance would reflect this posture.  I couldn’t have been more wrong as they put on what will likely be the best show of the week fronted by a brilliantly strong frontwoman with a relaxed posture and a beast of a voice.  It was such a force coming from those microphones that I couldn’t tell if they were belting out the lyrics in English or French and it fully didn’t matter.  As I ran around the room trying to figure out the name of the band, each person near me looked on as if I were deaf and blind to enjoy such a show, only confirming how incredibly awesome this must be.  They’re called Dead Wife.
