It feels like Apes And Androids are on a mission to outdo Spinal Tap, and while this is probably an impossible task, it certainly is a joy to watch them try. Every moment seemed to be a mess of confetti, glow sticks, and all around good showmanship, but things didn’t take a true Tap-ish turn until the end of the set.
The sold-out crowd caused me to retreat towards the back of the room after a few songs where a few people were dressed in some strange costumes. Two girls in silver leotards and wigs were helping two guys in stilts and white monster costumes get ready (pictured above). The band brought out a choir from the front as the monsters made their way to the stage from the back. Meanwhile, more confetti rained down from the Bowery ceiling. All-in-all it was a sensory overload, but that was probably the whole idea.
Though Apes And Androids don’t have any additional shows scheduled, it’s likely they are plotting a way to make the next show an even bigger spectacle, but it’s hard to imagine how.
