Citay | Sound Fix | March 22, 2008

There is a certain heavenly aura surrounding San Francisco-based psych-rockers Citay. Helmed by guitarist Ezra Feinberg (Piano Magic) and Tim Green (the Fucking Champs), the largely instrumental collective initially was initially conceived as a studio project. However, with the help from members of Tussle, Crime in Choir, the Dry Spells, Meridians and 3 Leafs, their sprawling jams sprung to life onstage.

Perhaps it’s due, in large part, to their incessant use of fuzzy wailing guitars, feel-good rhythms and meticulous instrumentation–enough to induce euphoria. Or perhaps it’s the lucidity of their revivalist vision, which relies heavily upon the likes of Led Zeppelin and Santana. Either way, Citay’s performance at Sound Fix Lounge in Brooklyn last Saturday proved that the hazy vision is, in fact, as cohesive live as it is on CD–and this is an important distinction to be made.

Playing to a packed house of impressed (albeit terribly unorganized) onlookers, Citay rocked through a small yet expansive set comprising of select tunes from their latest album, Little Kingdom (Dead Oceans). Songs like “First Fantasy” and the title track “Little Kingdom” sailed majestically and seized hold of everyone, including the bar patrons and even babies alike. All in all, their performance made a lazy Saturday afternoon in a cramped Williamsburg lounge seem that much more down-home.
