Mason Proper | CMJ Office | July 20, 2007

After an energetic show last night at the Mercury Lounge, the five boys of Mason Proper stopped by the CMJ office for a stripped down four-song semi-acoustic performance right before they hopped back in the van and headed home to Michigan. While most acts that grace our stage (er…floor by our desks) opt for minimal instrumentation, Mason Proper came with a drumkit, amplifiers, and even a melodica in tow. Opening with a steady, saloon-worthy version of “My My (Bad Fruit),” the band sounded comfortable and loose in the acoustic setting. After blissfull rendition of “100 Years” and a run through fan-favorite “Miss Marylou Carreau”, the band treated CMJ staffers to the first ever live performance of b-side “Travelling Man (The Pond),” which saw smiles appear on frontman Jonathan Visgr’s face as he strained his sharp croon to be heard over the music. Clearly, the treat wasn’t just for us.

The band released their debut full-length There Is A Moth In Your Chest through Dovecote Records this past March and are now out on tour in support. In a few days they’ll head out for a few Midwest dates with Ra Ra Riot and others before making a stop at this year’s Monolith Festival in Morrison, CO alongside such acts as the Flaming Lips, Spoon, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.
