Mason Proper | Mercury Lounge | July 19, 2007

Last night’s Mason Proper show at Mercury Lounge proved this band is on to something. In spite of an early set of a sold out gig and numerous technical issues, the Ann Arbor band plowed through a number of tracks off their fantastical debut There’s A Moth On Your Chest (Dovecote), adding in a few newbies for the die-hard fans who turned up.

Frontman Jonathan Visgr kicked off his sneakers half way through the set to “feel” the music, showing off his now standard spastic movements that feel anything but formulated. Together with the noise-ier aspects of the band, including Matt Thomson’s suitcase of tricks that I’ll never quite understand (however, whatever he did with his cell phone last night was pretty incredible). It’s songs like “Friendship” that keep the quirk factor there, but finishing out the set with “My My (Bad Fruit)” shows the band is ready for much bigger audiences. An eclectic band with an energetic live show, Mason Proper tend to take whatever comes at them, kick off their shoes, and enjoy the ride.

Check out their new video for “My My (Bad Fruit)” over on their MySpace page, with the rest of the tour dates below.
