Man Man | McCarren Park Pool | July 1, 2007

Last week’s show at McCarren Park Pool felt like just a warm up after Man Man took the stage in Brooklyn on Sunday. The band’s vaudeville meets Tom Waits sound puts a smile on my face at every single show. Surrounded by several thousand people, it was clear I wasn’t the only one who was smiling.

Man Man’s growth to the large stage has been so natural (perhaps aided from opening for Modest Mouse recently), yet they never seem to abandon the intimate lessons that a small stage taught them. McCarren Park Pool’s stage is huge, yet unlike most bands who spread out on the vast stage, Man Man found themselves in their usual set up: huddled together right in the middle with Honus Honus occasionally jumping up away from his keyboard to do the chicken dance or something equally silly and entertaining. It makes me wonder if Dan Deacon, who is playing at McCarren Park Pool next week, will figure out a way to set up in the middle of the crowd instead of on stage. More Man Man dates and photos of the opening acts, Dengue Fever and Illinois, below as well as in Bryan’s post.
